Is there any easy way to connect to a wireless outside of school?  like if we go on vacation or go to conferences.

It depends on the situation. Starbucks has an open wireless environment.  Just have a seat and turn it on. 

To scan for wireless, click on the little wireless icon in the taskbar (lower right) .  View wireless networks>refresh network list.  If it is a secure network (locked) you will not be able to connect unless you have a password.  Otherwise just connect.

Hotels have different policies.  Some make you pay, others only have wired access, others have nothing.  You will have to ask them.
