Saint Ursula Academy Hosts Spring Letter of Intent Signing EventCincinnati, Ohio – Tuesday, May 9, 2017 – Saint Ursula Academy is proud to announce the seniors who participated in a college athletic signing ceremony on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 to announce their intent to play college sports.

Kelli Bertoia of Anderson, daughter of Jeanne and Doug Bertoia, has committed to play Basketball at Division III Ohio Wesleyan University.

Alex Reed of Madeira, daughter of Amy and Eric Reed, has committed to play Field Hockey at Division III Wittenberg University.

Kelli Bertoia will play basketball for Ohio Wesleyan University in the fall. She played basketball all four years at Saint Ursula. She has been a member of the varsity team the past two seasons. She has played AAU basketball since the fourth grade. Her most recent team is the Cincinnati Shock.

Off the court, Kelli is a good student. She earned first or second honors each quarter at SUA and is a member of the National Honor Society. She is a member of the Students for Advancement (SFA) club, Earth Club and Gingers and Co. club which promotes skin safety. She is also a member of Student Outreach Services (SOS) through which she volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House and the Roll Hill Community Center.

Kelli’s Varsity Saint Ursula coach, Jill Meiring, said “Kelli was a great teammate this year and a huge asset to the program the past 4 years. She is the type of player every coach wants on their team in that she pushes herself for the betterment of the team. Every day in practice, Kelli worked tirelessly to improve her skills and help out the team in any way she could. Her work ethic, combined for her passion and knowledge of the game, will be instrumental to her success at Ohio Wesleyan. The program will miss her, but we know she'll bring the same intensity and competitiveness as a Bishop as she did as a Bulldog.”

Her club coach, Floyd Brewer, said this about Kelli, ““Coaching great kids has always been a reflection of great parents and coaching Kelli has always been a great experience.”

Alex Reed will play Field Hockey at Wittenberg University in the fall. She played Field Hockey at Saint Ursula Academy all four years. She played on the Varsity Field Hockey Team for three years and was Team Captain senior year. She also earned the Bulldog Award for her leadership on the team.

Alex was named First Team All-League in 2016 when she ranked third in the league in scoring. She was named Second Team All-League in 2015 and Honorable Mention All-League in 2014. She was a 2016 All-Ohio nominee, 2016 Field Hockey Player of the Year nominee in the Greater Cincinnati Sports Awards, and a 2014-2015 fall All-Star in the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Alex also played on the 2016 FHL Club Championship Team and the 2015-2016 FHL National Indoor Team.

At Saint Ursula, she is president of the Animal Awareness club and a member of the Students for Advancement (SFA) club.

Varsity Saint Ursula coach Tori Vogelgesang said, “I've had the privilege of seeing Alex develop over the past four years, both athletically and personally. From her freshman year when I pulled her aside and reminded her that she's good enough to compete with the older girls - to be confident, to seeing that confidence today. Alex is among the most finesse players in the league – her ability to move at speed, with the ball tight on her stick and protected through multiple defenders and create attack opportunities not even visible from the sideline is exceptional. She is a quick, fluid player, darting in and out of defensive lines and doubling back on defense. She is competitive and a leader, both of which can be attributed to her pure love of the game.

I am proud of Alex for many things, including being an All-Ohio finalist, but today, I am most proud to welcome her to my alma mater and the Wittenberg family and to call her a fellow Tiger. I look forward to following your career, Alex. Tiger Up!”

Her club coach, Keli Smith, said “"It has been an absolute pleasure working with Alex over the last several years. I know she is going to be a great asset to Wittenberg University's field hockey program. Her work ethic and grit, combined with great hand and eye coordination are going to serve her well at the next level. Although I am very sad to see her go, I am equally thrilled to watch her develop at the next level and pursue her dreams."
