Carolyn Markley Named OHSAA Southwest and GGCL Player of the Year

Cincinnati, Ohio, November 21, 2013 – St. Ursula Academy is proud to announce that junior Carolyn Markley of Maineville was named the 2013 Southwest Ohio District Golf Player of the Year by the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA). Additionally, she was recognized as the Girls Greater Catholic League (GGCL) Player of the Year. This year, representing Saint Ursula, she tied for fourth place at the 2013 OHSAA State Championships.

Markley has been playing golf since she was a small child when she and her father would play golf by hitting golf balls into a turtle sandbox in her front yard. Her father has continued to support her and help her develop her golf game.

Says Carolyn, “My dad has always been a positive influence in my life, a coach, a mentor, and a friend.”

When asked about the importance to golf her in life, Carolyn is aware that the lessons learned in golf will prepare her for other situations off the course. “On the course there is no referee to watch you constantly, and that instills a sense of integrity into your life. When you break a rule and no one else is there to see, it is your duty to report it and to be honest with yourself. That is the most valuable lesson I have learned from this sport.”

St. Ursula Academy golf coach Mark Hannahan is proud of Carolyn’s accomplishments and believes the Player of the Year awards are well deserved. “Carolyn is a very talented golfer and a wonderful young lady. She has worked hard on her game for many years, playing in competitive tournaments around the country and spending countless hours on the practice range. She has a rare combination of natural talent, mental discipline, intelligence, motivation and a competitive drive. As a result, she has become the most talented golfer to ever play at SUA, and one of the best female high school golfers in the state. Her work ethic, consideration for others, sportsmanship, and quiet dignity have served as an excellent role model for the entire team and been a major contributor to our team's success.”

In addition to golf, Carolyn is also very involved at St. Ursula Academy. She is on the crew of the school literary magazine, participates on the Mock Trial team, coordinates an annual Empty Bowls Event focusing on hunger in our community, and she designed a portion of the school’s annual Christmas card for 2013.

She has verbally committed to play golf for Michigan State University after graduation from SUA. Michigan State is known for its accomplished golf program.
