St. Ursula Academy Students Roll Up Sleeves for Hoxworth Blood Center

Cincinnati, Ohio, February 25, 2014 – Hoxworth Blood Center is always in need of blood donors, but this year the need is even greater. St. Ursula Academy students heard about the increased need and responded in a big way.

As we are all aware, the harsh winter across the United States has led to cancellations and delays in schools, airlines, and businesses. The American Red Cross wants us to also be aware that this difficult weather has caused many blood drives to be cancelled as well, and the reserve supplies of blood across the nation are dwindling.

A blood drive, organized by Teresa Callahan of White Oak, Megan Huber of Delhi, and Tassy Taylor of Anderson was recently held at St. Ursula Academy. 60 students, two faculty, and a member of the St. Ursula community rolled up their sleeves to donate blood to help offset some of this critical shortage experienced by the Hoxworth Blood Center and the American Red Cross.

St. Ursula Academy senior Jonaysha Burrow from the West End donated blood for the first time at the event held on February 19. “It’s for a good cause! Everyone should definitely give blood if they can. It feels like we are all working together to help someone.”

Robbie Russo, SUA School Nurse, helped coordinate the event and is pleased that students are given the chance to examine their role within the community. “The drive reinforces the idea that each of us is interdependent and that we each have a responsibility to help one another. We all cannot do everything for everybody, but each of us can do something for someone.”
