Ursuline Sisters of Cincinnati Announce Year-long Historical Series

Cincinnati, Ohio: January 2014. - Maria Longworth Storer, well known in the Cincinnati area for founding Rookwood Pottery, continues to enrich women’s lives and history at the local, national and international levels. During her lifetime, Maria influenced art, music, religion and politics and her philanthropic generosity impacted many people and organizations.

A major impact of her generosity is in use every day at St. Ursula Academy. In 1914, Maria and her husband Bellamy Storer, knocked on the Ursulines of Cincinnati Convent door on McMillan Street in East Walnut Hills. At the suggestion of Archbishop Henry K. Moeller, they came to the Sisters to ask to attend Mass in the Convent chapel. The Sisters’ school, St. Ursula Academy, was now four years old and already the one-room chapel in their parlor was overcrowded.

This was the catalyst for Maria and Bellamy to make a donation, and to find additional donations, to support the building of the chapel. Maria influenced the design of the altar and she and Bellamy donated the stained glass window of the Annunciation. They also built an addition to the building to use as their Cincinnati residence, which was kept by Maria even after Bellamy’s death, until 1928. Afterward these areas became classrooms for the growing academy.

The Sisters at St. Ursula continue their relationship with Maria’s family and maintain a friendship with them today. In celebrating the legacy of Maria Longworth Storer, the Sisters are sponsoring and participating in a series of events, which recognize the achievements and possibilities of all women. Please join us.
