St. Ursula Academy Students Make Blankets for Project Linus

Cincinnati, Ohio, February 7, 2014 – The National Honor Society (NHS) at St. Ursula Academy recently participated in a Service Learning Project to benefit Project Linus, an organization which “provides love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer blanketeers.”

Through St. Ursula Academy’s mission statement, students are encouraged to “build a better world.” Like many groups on campus, the National Honor Society takes this mission seriously and continuously seeks needs in our community and ways in which they can help.

One of this year’s main projects has been to make blankets, which are donated to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center to comfort patients. Juniors and seniors worked together to create approximately 50 blankets for donation.

Senior Sarah Clark of Bridgetown was involved in the project. She says, “Making the blanket was a fun project and also very rewarding because I knew I was helping someone. A blanket is a great gift for this time of year and this project is also a wonderful way for classmates to come together to help someone in need.”

Each year, the NHS sponsors two major charitable activities. The Mitten Tree is an annual event in which students collect mittens for the less fortunate in our community. The benefactors for the second project change each year. Last year the students created snack bags for an after school program. This year Project Linus was chosen by the officers and moderators of the organization.
