Cincinnati,
Ohio, April 19, 2018 – Saint
Ursula Academy is pleased to announce that Sarah Geraghty ’18 of Western Hills was
accepted into the University of Cincinnati’s highly competitive Connections
Dual Admissions Program.The Connections
Dual Admissions Program, a dual admissions BS/MD program, allows high school
seniors to apply and be accepted to both the University of Cincinnati
undergraduate college and the University of Cincinnati College of
Medicine simultaneously. The Connections Dual Admissions Program is a
non-accelerated, eight-year baccalaureate / MD program.
Students
admitted to the Connections Dual Admissions Program must first be accepted into
the University of Cincinnati’s undergraduate program in Medical Sciences,
which is an innovative degree providing students with integrated academic,
experiential, and mentored opportunities that will prepare them for advanced
training in medicine and biomedical sciences. In 2017, one-thousand students
applied to the Medical Sciences undergraduate major and only 70 were chosen.
Thirty two of these students were selected to interview for the Connections
program and 12 were selected.
We asked Sarah
to share her experience.
Why did you apply to this program?
I applied to
this program because I have always had a strong interest in going into a career
in medicine. Because Connections allows me to be admitted into medical school
without having to compete with other applicants four years down the road, it
was a dream to be accepted!
What do you hope to study in college?
Along with the Medical Sciences major, I plan to minor in Spanish and earn a certificate in Medical Spanish so I can speak to patients in a medical setting. I also plan to participate in the Medical Spanish/Latino Health Elective, which is a track during medical school in which students are immersed in Latino culture as it relates to health. In terms of extracurricular activities, I want to continue playing music at CCM (Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music) where I have studied violin for 11 years.
What are your career goals?
I hope to be a
bilingual physician who is able to serve underserved communities, such as
native Spanish-speaking populations, because all people deserve equal access to
and quality of healthcare.
How will this program help you reach
your goals?
Being in the
Connections Program will help me network from the time I am an undergrad
through graduation from medical school. The classes I take will continue to
strengthen my work ethic, and the relationships I build with those I meet will
help me understand more about the world in which I live. I am excited to pursue
Spanish studies in tandem with my science studies which I believe will help me
work one day as a bilingual physician.
How did Saint Ursula help prepare you to
apply to this program?
I could not
have applied for this program without the support system I have at Saint
Ursula. When applying, not only did I feel academically competent, but I was
also confident in my abilities to succeed in such a competitive admissions
process because of the experiences I have had at SUA. I had to be able to work
in teams, think critically about various scenarios, weigh pros and cons of
situations, and respond to being put on the spot throughout the interview
process. I felt prepared for this as an SUA student. Additionally, my counselor
and the teachers who wrote me recommendation letters were crucial to my
success.
How do you feel about earning a spot in
this coveted program?
I am thrilled
to be admitted! It feels like my hard work for years has paid off. I do not
take for granted this opportunity, and I cannot wait to study at UC where I
will meet amazing people and learn what it means to be a physician.
