Cincinnati, Ohio, January 7, 2015– Congressman Brad Wenstrup visited students at Saint Ursula Academy in December after the girls wrote letters to area lawmakers during social studies class to learn more about the governing process.
Prior to the fall elections, Saint Ursula college preparatory American Government teacher Marti Butz asked her social studies students to learn about the issues and to write to someone in leadership to ask questions and share comments about their district. A few of the students wrote to Congressman Wenstrup, asking him to come and visit their class and to talk about life in leadership and the US government. He accepted the invitation and visited Saint Ursula Academy on December 16, 2014.
“All of the seniors are required to work on a political campaign, as well, and many of them volunteered for Congressman Wenstrup,” said Saint Ursula Academy teacher Marti Butz.
“The students asked me several questions in the letters about my experience in office, so I thought to best way to respond was to answer their questions in person,” said Congressman Brad Wenstrup, 2nd District Ohio.
Wenstrup answered questions from the students about challenges in his district like jobs, the budget and battling the region’s heroin epidemic. He also talked broadly when he answered questions about immigration, economic issues, and national security.
Dr. Wenstrup said the students’ letters were filled with good questions, such as “why should students be informed and involved?” He responded, “Because the future is yours,” and explained that active and engaged people can make a real difference.
His advice to the students as they plan their goals for the future, “Focus on what you can do for others and all the rest will fall into place.”
