Cincinnati, Ohio, March 11, 2014 – 19 students from St. Ursula Academy joined with hundreds of other high school students from across the Cincinnati area to participate in TechOlympics at the Millennium Hotel in February.
TechOlympics is Cincinnati’s premiere high school technology competition and expo. High school students gather for the weekend to network with professionals, work on resume development and interview skills, learn about the latest advancements in technology, and compete against area schools in programming, networking, and digital design challenges.
The goal of TechOlympics is “to promote the technology of today by celebrating those who will invent the technology of tomorrow” and St. Ursula Academy students proved they could meet the challenge, finishing 5th overall in the competition among 54 schools represented.
The St. Ursula Academy entry in the Showcase Competition, a website designed for local non-profit organization Open Door, earned high honors. In response to this entry, the team consisting of Claire Crispen of Ft. Wright, KY, Nicole Kitko of Green Township, and Emily Throckmorton of Loveland was invited to participate in the UC Technology Expo to be held in April.
St. Ursula challenges students to be “reflective thinkers” and Tiana Key of Lincoln Heights lived up to that challenge during this event. She was recognized by the TechOlympics organization for her insightful and probing questions about technology.
Instructional Technology Coordinator Margie Matthews encourages St. Ursula Academy students to take part in this event.
“Students do not always have a clear understanding of what 'technology' means. Many see it as a solitary profession inhabited by geeky people. TechOlympics along with the other INTERalliance programs helps to bust that myth by showcasing the wide variety of exciting tech professions there are in almost every field. The TechOlympics Expo and competition is not only informative but great fun as well. That was obvious from the active participation, the cheers and the smiles from the students.”
