“To Kill a Mockingbird” is the coming of age story of Scout Finch in the 1930’s. The novel, told through the eyes of Scout, follows her father, Atticus Finch through the case of a lifetime. Atticus is a prominent lawyer in the small town of Maycomb, Alabama. He is defending Tom Robinson, an African-American man accused of raping Mayella Ewell, a white woman. Finch is fighting a losing battle. He is up against an all-white, all male jury, which also happens to all be racist. Atticus challenges the town’s beliefs, values, and way of life by taking on this case. He shows the town that all people are created equal and deserve the same treatment. However, Robinson is convicted despite the fact that there was no actual evidence of a rape. Atticus Finch continues to help Tom, even though Tom is now in jail. Sadly, Tom decides to attempt to escape and is killed in the process. Throughout the novel, Scout witnesses the courage and bravery of her father and begins to question her own beliefs and values. In the process, she matures from a child into a young adult. |
