At St. Ursula Academy there are two types of scholarships: those which
are endowed (Non-Expendable Scholarship Fund) and those not endowed
(Expendable). Both are very important in determining the amount of financial
aid which the Academy can award each year. As financial aid needs and
requests increase, it is necessary that these scholarship funds grow. Gifts for scholarship purposes are, therefore, highly valued
contributions to St. Ursula Academy and its mission.
Endowed Scholarships
Many people are hesitant to consider the possibility of endowing a
scholarship because a large sum of money ($250,000) has to be invested to
endow in perpetuity a full scholarship at St. Ursula. However, many endowed
scholarships at St. Ursula have been partially funded with lesser amounts.
Donors and their families and friends make periodic gifts with the purpose
of increasing the principal of the minimum level ($25,000), to the fully
funded level, or some point in between. We ask donors to invest/pledge a
minimum of $25,000 with intentions of reaching $25,000 in 5 years, so that
we will be able to award at least a minimum of $1,000 scholarship when the
fund reaches $25,000. The level necessary for a fully endowed scholarship
fund is presently $250,000. The original investment doesn’t have to come
from a single donor. It might be established by a family, a group of friends
or business associates, or a group of graduates who wish to begin a
scholarship in the name of their class. Or, it could be established through
a bequest in one’s will or through some other planned gift vehicle.
These Endowed Scholarships, many of which are named memorials or family
funds, present an excellent opportunity to remember a family member or other
loved ones by making a lasting contribution to the work being done at St.
Ursula Academy. The interest generated from these endowments makes possible
significant financial assistance for deserving students, and these
endowments are essential if private schools like St. Ursula Academy are to
survive and flourish in the future.
Expendable Scholarships
Gifts can also be made for a one-year scholarship, which will be awarded the
following school year. The Academy’s treasurer places the contribution in
the Expendable Scholarship Reserve. The funds will be awarded each year and
will be totally used as needed during the following academic year in
providing financial assistance to St. Ursula Academy students.
Tribute Gifts for the Scholarship Fund
We encourage gifts of any amount at anytime, in memory or honor of a
relative or friend. These gifts may be made to the Expendable Scholarship
Reserve or may be made to increase the principal of fully or partially
Endowed Scholarships. It is an ideal way in which to remember a special
occasion shared with a loved one, or to remember someone who has passed
away. By providing financial assistance to students at St. Ursula Academy,
your gift becomes very meaningful. It is a memorial that “lives on” which
enriches the lives of those who benefit from such gifts.
