Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Annual Fund?
The Annual Fund consists of gifts raised annually (July 1 to June 30) to support current operations of SUA that are not covered by tuition and fees. It allows for the ability to provide the best education for the young women “entrusted to us” by attracting and retaining talented faculty, improving and maintaining the campus and providing financial assistance to families in need. Alumnae, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends of SUA all support the Annual Fund.

Why doesn’t the Academy charge enough to cover operating costs?
If tuition was increased to cover the actual cost of operating St. Ursula Academy, many families may not be able to send their daughters here. Remaining accessible to students of diverse economic background is central to our mission. An increase in tuition could mean a severe drop in our enrollment, resulting in a cutback of our programs and higher tuition increases in order to fund all operations; all of which would affect the education of our young women today.

Is giving to the Annual Fund unique to our school?
No. Private, independent schools have long relied upon the generosity and loyalty of their constituents to advance their institutions. Very few, if any, private, independent schools, colleges or universities meet full operational costs with tuition alone.

Who gives to the SUA Annual Fund?
In 2008-2009, $457,245 was raised through the Annual Fund. With 1,824 donors contributing, 54% were alumnae, 13% were current parents and 18% past parents. The remaining 15% came from the Board of Trustees, corporations, foundations, friends, grandparents, faculty and staff.

What does the Academy expect in terms of the Annual Fund?
Providing the best quality education in the Ursuline tradition, with the best faculty and facilities require the support of many. St. Ursula Academy has a rich history of thousands of people who have expressed their belief in and support of an Ursuline education by supporting the Annual Fund. Participation from all constituents that includes the alumnae, parents, grandparents, friends, faculty and staff is crucial in ensuring the best quality education for our young women today.

Does one gift really make a difference?
Every gift makes a difference, no matter what the amount, and helps to inspire other donors. Participation in the Annual Fund is an indicator of the value alumnae, parents and friends place on educational experiences. It is a gauge by which overall support for SUA is measured. Broad-based annual participation plays a major role in encouraging corporate and foundation donors to support the Academy.

How much should we give?
Only you can decide. We hope you will choose to participate at the leadership giving level and join the St. Angela Merici Society. Remember that all gifts are tax deductible to the extend allowed by law. The only gift too small is no gift at all!

What can an individual expect?
Each fall, the new fiscal year begins with the new Annual Fund Campaign (the fiscal year runs July 1- June 30). Alumnae, parents, grandparents, and friends are mailed a letter from the Annual Fund Chair or Committee Chairs with a brochure outlining the Annual Fund.

A volunteer Annual Fund committee member or representative of the Academy may follow-up that letter with a telephone call to ask for support of the new campaign and to answer any questions. Volunteers consist of alumnae, parents and past parents.

When will the fund drive begin?
You will receive a letter asking for your support in September. We ask that you make your commitment right away to keep the fundraising costs down since the Annual Fund is designed to offset annual expenses. If you pledge a gift, you may make quarterly or monthly payments to be completed by June 30.

Who can I call to ask additional questions?
