Open Clubs – Open to the General Student Population

 

American Youth Foundation: Moderator: Ms. Mueller

Criteria: Anyone interested can join especially those who attend the AYF Leadership Conference in Michigan.  The Conference is an intensive week long program that focuses on increasing: Personal Effectiveness, Effectiveness in Groups, Openness to Diversity and Social Responsibility.

Requirements: AYF at St. Ursula Academy is incorporated in Hands Across the Campus.  AYF members are expected to take leadership roles in Hands.  They must stay active in Hands to remain a member of AYF

Goals and Objectives: The American Youth Foundation inspires people to discover and develop their personal best.  The motto for AYF is “My own self, at my very best, all the time.”  Members are taught to seek mental, physical, social and spiritual balance in their lives and to make a positive difference in their communities and in the wider world.

AYF meets in CO24 for morning meetings as they are announced.

 

Anime Club: Moderator: Ms. Probst

Criteria: Members must have an interest in Japanese culture and have an interest in anime. All students are welcome to participate.

Requirements: Members must participate in fund raising events and pay a small membership fee.

Goals and Objectives: To discover Japanese culture through holiday celebrations, research history pertaining to the setting of a manga/series, learn about this popular genre of Asia and its effect on life in America, enhance short story writing and artistic abilities, and discuss and watch new/favorite mangas, shows, and anime movies.

Outside of School Activities: holiday celebrations

This club meets after school in the Carriage House.

 

Archaeology & Beyond: Moderator – Ms. Corder

Criteria: All students are eligible.

Requirements: Members are required to attend all meetings and participate in activities.

Goals & Objectives: The goal is to become culturally aware of the peoples throughout history

and their living styles.  It gives the girls the opportunity to explore the past while comparing it to present-day living.  In this club we look at not only history through ruins, but also through art, music, clothing trends, etc.

Outside of school activities: One meeting is held after school each month.  A trip is planned

during Spring Break each year and focuses on different cultures.

Art Club: Moderator – Ms. Klare

Criteria: Open to any student interested in art!

Requirements:  Members are expected to attend every club meeting.

Goals & Objectives: The Art club is designed to create and participate in activities and events that focus on art in our school and community; that will enhance the students love and skills for art. The art club is dedicated to sharing our love and talents of art to the community through service and volunteering.

 Outside of school activities: Field trips and competitions.

Book Club:  Moderator:  Ms. Frank

Criteria: Accepting approximately10 seniors until the last novel, which will be open to juniors interested in continuing the club.

Requirements: Must be able to purchase the selected novels and attend the meetings because it is essential in understanding the literature.  You must also be willing to have an open mind to all types of literature and be willing to express one’s view of the novel to others.

Goals & Objectives: To read a diverse selection of novels chosen by student members while exploring different authors and their techniques. Students also learn how to critique a piece of literature in a group setting and how to accept and understand another’s point of view.  

Outside of school activities: Read the selected book by the due date.

Classical Music Society:  Moderator: Miss Backherms

Criteria:  All students who are interested in listening to and/or performing classical music are welcome.

Requirements:  Members are expected to attend all meetings and participate in activities sponsored by the club.

Goals & Objectives:  To promote an appreciation of serious music at SUA and to provide a venue for performance to its members who are studying serious repertoire in preparation for auditions, music competitions, contests, festivals and recitals, or simply for enjoyment.

Outside of School Activities:  Members will have the opportunity to attend two professional concerts or recitals.

Classics Club: Moderator – Ms. Wilkey

Criteria: Students must meet one of the following requirements: 1. Be currently enrolled in a Latin class or Classical Mythology at SUA (this allows for freshmen who are enrolled in Latin, but will not be in classes until 2nd semester).  2. Previously enrolled as a Latin or Mythology student.

Requirements:  Attendance is mandatory at meetings. To maintain active member status, members must participate in the service project each year, as well as attend at least one social event. A record of all attendance is kept by the club secretary.

Goals & Objectives: To promote classical learning and build a community among classics students at SUA.  As part of the Junior Classical League, we also seek to promote the classics to the Ohio and national communities.

Outside school activities: Social events: themed parties, picnics, holiday outings. Meetings consist of organizational meetings and working sessions to prepare projects for convention.  Service events:  work for the local charity Dress for Success, participation in Make A Difference Day with Ohio Junior Classical League (OJCL).  Conventions: OJCL Convention; and National JCL Convention.

Cooking Club: Moderators – Ms. Milillo & Ms. Noe

Criteria: 10 SUA Juniors & 10 SUA Seniors - $10.00 dues per person per school year.

Requirements: Members are required to attend all field trips and off-site cooking classes, plus

participate in all fundraisers.  Members must be in attendance at all meetings.  Members must have the desire to learn culinary skills and expand knowledge of practical applications for meal preparation.

Goals & Objectives: To become accomplished cooks.  To develop an appreciation for good

cooking and prudent shopping.  To develop a basic understanding of good nutrition and skills for good meal planning, preparation and presentation.

Outside of school activities:  Field trips and off-site cooking classes.

E.A.R.T.H. Club:  Moderator – Ms. Arbona

Criteria: Students who are concerned with environmental issues, willing to gain greater

awareness and are able to participate in the club’s activities.

Requirements:  Any student interested in restoring environmental harmony may belong to the

club.

Goals & Objectives:  To foster awareness of environmental issues, and to support individual and

collective action.

Outside of school activities:  Recycling on Fridays after school.  Clean-up walks, nature walks

and letter writing.

French Club: Moderator – Dr. Greenfeld

Criteria: Students must have interest in the French language and culture.

Requirements: Students must have a minimum number of other extracurricular activities.

Students must attend at least 50% of meetings and participate in fundraising for the club. 

Goals & Objectives: Educate students by focusing on the French language, films, cuisine, and

culture.  Enjoy and participate in activities which will enhance learning about France. 

Organize exchange student program for each school year.

Outside of school activities: French films, trips to art museums, lunch at the Maisonnette.

Hands Across the Campus (HAC):  Moderators – Ms. Gessing & Ms. Mueller

Criteria: Members must support the goals of Hands.

Requirements: Members must attend three meetings and do three activities each semester.

Goals & Objectives: The goal is to build awareness, increase knowledge and develop skills of

human relations, making high schools inclusive environments where all ethnic, racial and religious groups can play meaningful roles.

Outside of school activities: Field trips, Food for Thought discussion groups and a spring

workshop sponsored by the American Jewish Council are some examples of our outside activities.

L.I.V.E. Poet’s Society: Moderator – Ms. Cors

L.I.V.E. stands for Language in Vivid Expression.

Criteria: Freshmen by invitation only.   All sophomores-seniors welcome.

Requirements: Love of creative writing, poetry reading, and sharing.

Goals & Objectives: To promote creative writing and poetry reading at SUA.

Outside of school activities: after-school sharing sessions, poetry slams, outings to museums, movies based on literature, coffee houses, three pie sales a year, and related events.

Math Club: Moderator – Ms. Depoe and Ms. Kelly

Criteria: Interest in math and competitions.

Requirements:  Love of math.

Goals & Objectives: To prepare students for upcoming competitions.  To develop a love of the

beauty and complexity of mathematics and explore extraordinary topics not usually covered in class.

Outside of school activities: Rose Hulman Math Competition, Ohio Math League Tests, Ohio

Council of Teachers of Mathematics Competition, JETS Engineering Competition, American Mathematics Competition and University of Cincinnati Math Bowl.

In-School Service Events (ISSE) Club:  Moderator – Ms. Kemper

Criteria: Need to be a Service Captain for your class (4 Seniors, 2 Juniors, 2 Sophomores, and 2 Freshmen) or a Service Homeroom Representative (1-2 students from each homeroom).  Anyone can apply in the Community Service Office! 

Requirements: Desire to give of yourself to help the less fortunate and motivate other to do the same.  Apply to be a class leader as a captain or a homeroom leader as a service representative. 

Goal:  To motivate students and organize a variety of service events in the school, such as weekly mission collections, canned food drive, coat drive, and personal care drive.   

Outside School Activities: Helping to organize and deliver the donations from the various service drives and events.

Activity Day: C-1 in Community Service Office.  Every other meeting will be with service captains only.

 

PEACE(People Everywhere Actively Committed to Ethics)Club:  Moderator – Ms. Curran

Criteria:  Students who are concerned with peace and justice issues and willing to take an active

stance against social injustices in our world.   

Requirements:  An open mind, willingness to participate and spread awareness. Open to all grade levels.

Goals & Objective :  To promote the education and awareness of social and political injustices in

our world.  To recognize that as human beings we are capable of becoming proponents of positive change.      To recognize that as human beings we are capable of becoming proponents of change. Issues may include: war, capital punishment, social welfare, globalization, poverty, third world nations, religions tolerance, and cultural identity. 

Outside School Activities: Prayer vigils, demonstrations, speakers, marches, letter writing, and

peaceful protests.

Shakespeare Club:  Moderator:  Mr. Saelens

Criteria:  Shakespeare Club is open to any one who is interested in learning more about life, people, literature, theatre, and Shakespeare.  It is also for people who like to go to shows and be entertained!   There is open membership in this club--join  for just one play or for as many as you like--come and go as you please. 

Requirements:  an open mind

Goals & Objectives: To give students an opportunity to experience Shakespeare as it is meant to be experienced--in the theatre!  The club meets twice for each production of a Shakespearean play in the Cincinnati Shakespeare Festival' current season.  At the first meeting a member of the St. Ursula Academy English department provides some background for the individual play.  It is not necessary to read the plays ahead of time to see them, hear them, and enjoy them, and the background provided will orient you to the subject and basic premise of the play in production.  After we've seen the show, we meet again the following week to discuss what we saw. 

Outside of school activitiesMembers see the play on their own or in groups, and you can order your tickets through the club  (parents are welcome, too). 

Meeting timesMeetings are after school, from 3:15 -- 4:00 in room E105, usually on Mondays, but only as scheduled (not every week).  Meeting times and dates are posted in the school and e-mailed to those who sign up for Shakespeare Club.

 

Ski Club: Moderator: Ms. Behen

Criteria: The Ski Club is open to any student.  

Goals and Objectives: its mission is to create interest in outdoor activities and to provide opportunities for students to ski and snowboard at Perfect North Slopes. Members, members' friends, and families receive discounted passes when they are purchased through the club in the fall.

Requirements: Members must purchase a Perfect North Slopes pass through the Ski Club in order to be a member.

Outside of School Activities: Special ski club events are planned throughout the year so that the club members can ski together. Ski trips to resorts outside Cincinnati may also be planned.

Meetings are held before or after school as needed.

 

Spanish Club:  Moderator – Ms. Kleinfelder

Criteria: Students must be currently enrolled in a Spanish course.

Requirements: Students must attend club meetings.

Goals & Objectives: To learn more about Hispanic cultures through music, film, etc.  Also, we

will learn how to reach out to help the Latin community in our area.

Outside of school activities: Collections for Su Casa.  Volunteer programs with Latin American

festivals and Su Casa.  Bake sales & going to Mexican restaurants after school.

Club Day 1 in Room S106

 

St. Ursula Ensemble Theatre (S.E.T.):  Moderator – Ms. Davis

Criteria: Members learn basic acting skills as well as receive backstage technical instruction.

Requirements: Attend meetings and club sponsored events.  Missing three meetings or

activities will result in dismissal from the Club. Treat others with dignity, courtesy and consideration.

Goals & Objectives: To produce one play and one musical per year.

Outside of school activities: Producing the Fall Play and Spring Musical.  Attending theatre

productions in the community and professional tours. Two collections per school year for Tender Mercies.  Earning memberships in the National Thespian Society.

Student Outreach Services (S.O.S.): Moderator – Ms. Kemper

Criteria: All are welcome.

Requirements: Desire and availability to commit to regular community service which helps us reflect God’s love and live out the spirit of St. Angela Merici.

Goals & Objectives: Choose an agency at which they would like to volunteer.  Become part of a group who regularly volunteers, either monthly or weekly and reflect on the service experience.  A few examples of this club’s service opportunities are:  Housing Rehab, Bethany House Shelter, Soup Kitchen, Visiting with the Elderly, After school tutoring.

Outside of school activities:  Regular service and celebration times each month.

Club Day 2 in Dining Hall – every other meeting will be board directors only.

 

Technology Club: Moderators – Ms. Herald and Ms. Piper

Criteria: Open to all interested students.

Requirements: Participate in meetings, workshops and digital production creation.  All members

must participate in majority of activities.

Goals & Objectives: To immerse our students in sophisticated multimedia projects that stimulate

their “technological imaginations” and lead to the creation of tech savvy and confident female leaders.

Outside of school activities: Workshops 1.5 hours.  Digital production creation 1-2 hours.

World Affairs Club: Moderator – Mr. Dauner

Criteria: Any St. Ursula student interested in international affairs and international human rights.

Requirements: Students must be willing to attend regular meetings and to participate in club

activities.

Goals & Objectives: To encourage interest in international affairs.  To participate in human rights

campaigns.  To participate in activities sponsored for secondary students by the Cincinnati Council on World Affairs.  To learn negotiation skills as a member of the Model UN Team.

Outside of school activities: ECMUN – Earlham College Model United Nations.  “Issue

conferences” organized by the Cincinnati and Dayton Councils on World Affairs.  Going to see foreign movies at the Esquire Movie Theater and then having dinner at the Ambar India Restaurant next door.  Club officers regularly attend a city wide planning committee for the Cincinnati Council on World Affairs.  Occasionally Amnesty International sponsors a lecture or rally that some members attend.

Selective Clubs – Membership by Invitation

 

Academic Team:  Moderator???

Criteria:  Students are hand picked for this Club based on academic performance.  We look at

G.P.A., National Merit Finalists and commended students. 

Requirements:  All members must be in attendance at all in-school meetings, sign up for at least

4 competitions/tournaments, attend one practice a month after school and participate in the food sales.

Goals & Objectives: To represent St. Ursula Academy by competing in matches for the Greater

Cincinnati Academic League.  To foster an atmosphere that supports the pursuit of academic excellence.

Outside of school activities: Competitions at Cincinnati State in the fall and early winter.

Practice sessions after school and an end-of-the year party.

Ambassadors: Moderator – Mrs. Loch

Criteria: Students audition as freshmen (both in the fall and spring).  Once accepted in the

spring, they remain an Ambassador for their three years of high school.

Requirements:  Members are required to attend every meeting.  Failure to attend meetings or

scheduled events means that you may be suspended or dismissed from the Ambassador organization.

Goals & Objectives: To represent St. Ursula Academy in a confident, enthusiastic and skilled

manner in the school setting and in the community.  Ambassadors participate in: 8th grade shadow visits to SUA, Open House, Entrance Test, Freshman Registration, Spring Visit Program and correspondence for incoming freshmen and visits to grade schools.

Outside of school activities: Visits and presentations to grade schools.

Bulldog Buddies Program:  Moderator – Ms. Kemper

Criteria:  The Bulldog Buddies program will consist of approximately 50 Junior and

Senior SUA mentors.

Requirements: A minimum of one hour a week commitment throughout the school year.

Completion of two training sessions, one in the summer.  A cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.  A sense of collaboration with Bulldog Buddies administration and staff.  The ability to be honest and trustworthy regarding sensitive and confidential matters.

Goals & Objectives: The St. Ursula Bulldog Buddies is a student-mentoring program designed to

foster the growth of female elementary students from Douglass Elementary.

Outside of school activities: The Junior and Senior mentors and their Buddies will

engage in a variety of academic and social activities in a safe, healthy and nurturing environment.

Meeting Day: Monthly lunch meeting on the first Tuesday of the month; after school meetings once a quarter before tutoring.

 

Beech Acres Mentoring Program - SIBA:  Moderator – Ms. Kemper

Criteria:  The SIBA program will consist of approximately 25 Sophomore, Junior and

Senior SUA mentors.

Requirements: A minimum of two hours a month commitment throughout the school year.

Completion of two training sessions, one in the summer.  A cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.  A sense of collaboration with Beech Acres administration and staff.  The ability to be honest and trustworthy regarding sensitive and confidential matters.

Goals & Objectives: The St. Ursula/Beech Acres SIBA Program is a mentoring

program in which SUA students are paired with Beech Acres clients.  Beech Acres is an agency that supports children who are at risk, dealing with various family issues, from poverty to abuse.  The girls will meet monthly to participate in activities designed to enhance self-esteem and build self-confidence.

Outside of school activities: The Sophomore, Junior and Senior mentors and their Beech Acres    

"sibs" will engage in a variety of social activities in a safe, healthy and nurturing environment.

Meeting Day: During lunch once a quarter; after school meetings twice a year.  

 

Diplomats: Moderators - Mrs. Romweber and Ms. Vonderhaar

Criteria: Any student who is not currently an Ambassador and is in grades 10-12 may sign up to

join this club.  Sign-ups for this position are on designated days each May.  Current Diplomats will automatically be added to the roster.  Freshmen may sign-up in May of their freshman year. 

Requirements:  Attend and participate in meetings and regularly scheduled events.  Make calls,

cards and treats for incoming freshmen.  Communicate with current freshmen throughout the year orally, through locker signs, etc.  Write notes of condolence, congratulations, get well and faculty birthday cards.  Represent SUA with dignity, courtesy and consideration in school and in the community.

Goals & Objectives:  To work closely with the principal, admissions officer and the Ambassadors

to foster a spirit of community within the school, to welcome incoming students, faculty members and to help bring a family spirit to the entire school by gestures of goodwill.

Outside of school activities: Meetings will normally be held either before or after school on an

as-needed basis.  Meetings will be held in the dining room and will usually last one hour unless otherwise noted.

French Honor Society:  Moderator – Ms. Lea & Mr. Icsman

Criteria:  Students must have a cumulative GPA of A- in French during the semester of initiation

as well as a B or better in all other classes during that time; students must exhibit leadership and interest in French activities; students must be in the second semester (“term”) of French 2 or higher; transfer students must have spent at least one full semester in the high school before becoming eligible.

Requirements:  Requirements for continuing membership are spelled out by chapter bylaws and

are approved by the moderator and club officers.  Some service hours are required annually.  Membership can be revoked “for reasons of failure to maintain a high scholastic average, of behavior inappropriate to an honor society, irregular participation in FHS activities, insufficient service hours, and failure to attend the initiation ceremony,” among other reasons.

Goals and Objectives:  To expand students’ knowledge of and appreciation for the French

language and culture through a variety of activities and service projects.

Outside of School Activities:  Service work and various field trips.

Girls Athletic Association (GAA):  Moderator - Mrs. Perry

Criteria:  You need not be an athlete to join GAA.  Club members must conduct themselves with

dignity, courtesy and consideration during all meetings and activities.

Requirements: Attend, be punctual, and actively participate in all club meetings and activities.

Sell 8 magazines for the fall magazine drive.  Prepay $30 for spring flower sale. Attend the three mandatory GAA meetings per year. Failure to live up to GAA requirements may result in forced resignation.

Goals & Objectives:  To develop school spirit and support athletics.

Outside of school activities: Father-Daughter Dance, and attendance at athletic contests is

expected.

Club Day:  3 mandatory meetings throughout the year on C-2 Days

Criteria: Interest in creative writing, willingness to be a careful and critical reader of poetry, short

stories and other creative works.

Requirements: Attendance at meetings and a willingness to edit students’ work.

Goals & Objectives: To raise awareness of creative endeavors at SUA; to serve as an outlet of

creative expression; to generate student interest in the literary arts and to encourage students to share their works with a larger audience.  The end product is a student-created literacy magazine.

Outside of school activities: Exploring options with current members.

Club Day:  After school meetings in room E105

 

Mock Trial: Moderators – Mr. Dauner & Ms. Penick

Criteria: Interest in the court system and willingness to give up time from the end of October –

February to prepare and compete.

Requirements: Mock Trial is open to Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors interested in the judicial

system.

Goals & Objectives: A legal case is presented before a judge and competitions are held with

other high schools in the area.

Outside of school activities:  Meetings are held after school from October through March.

Competitions are held on the city and state levels.

PAL Mentor Program: Moderator – Dr. Martin 

Criteria: The Peer Assistance and Leadership (PAL) Mentor Program consists of 27 students.

Only Juniors and Seniors may serve as PAL Mentors.

Requirements: The following characteristics are required: a cumulative GPA of 2.3 or higher;

respect and support of SUA’s name, teachers, administration and staff; constant adherence to all school policies, including uniform regulations; sense of collaboration with homeroom teachers, moderators and other mentors in the PAL program; compliance with what is expected of a SUA leader.

Goals & Objectives: The St. Ursula Academy PAL Mentor Program helps to facilitate a smooth

transition for young women entering the ninth grade.  The Junior and Senior Mentors consistently spend time with their freshman homerooms building rapport, promoting school spirit and empowering the young women, so as to help them establish a foundation for success in high school.

Outside of school activities:  Mentors attend monthly meetings with the moderators outside the

school day.  Mentors will actively promote school spirit by endorsing and encouraging attendance at school activities like sports events, play performances, service opportunities, etc.

Science Olympics: Moderator – Ms. Siegel

Criteria: scientific curiosity and an interest in learning to apply the principles of science learned in the classroom to a variety of projects

Requirements: Science Olympics is a competitive academic team consisting of 15 members and 2 alternates. Membership on the team is open to all freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors although an attempt is made to achieve a balance among the various grade levels and scientific disciplines.

Goals and Objectives: The Science Olympiad is an international, nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science, and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by students and teachers. Competitions are held each year on the regional, state, and national levels. St. Ursula’s Science Olympic team has a tradition of being among the top teams in the Cincinnati Region, frequently advancing to competition at the State level.

Outside of school activities: Attendance is required at 1 – 3 competitions a year as well as several training sessions, usually held on Saturdays.

Club Day: occasional before and after school meetings in S007

 

Spanish Honor Society:  Moderator – Mrs. Strotman

Criteria:  Students need a B+ or higher average at the end of Spanish III to become a member.

Membership by invitation only.

Requirements:  Regular attendance is preferred, but some members are in clubs that meet at

the same time.  Consequently, perfect attendance is not a requirement.

Goals & Objectives:  To sponsor a Spanish-speaking child through World Vision.  Our profit from

the taco sales goes to our child, Dersidia, from the Dominican Republic.  She is now 11 years old and we began sponsoring her when she was 6.  We also donate money to the Heifer Project, provide speakers, salsa dancing, activities and cultural experiences and a party for the CASP students from Barcelona.

Outside of school activities:  Field trips to Jalapeno’s Restaurant twice a year.  Volunteer work at

the Hispanic Festival at St. Charles Borromeo Church in September.  Other activities with the Hispanic community.

Club Day 1 in Room S104

 

Student Council: Moderators – Ms. Curran & Ms. Behen

Criteria: All students are eligible for membership.  However, participation is contingent upon

maintaining a passing grade in all classes.  

Requirements: All class levels elect Student Council Co-chairs, a secretary, class presidents

and homeroom representatives.  All members should attend meetings and events sponsored by the Student Council unless excused by the moderators.

Goals & Objectives: To provide for training and experience in the skills and techniques of good

citizenship and leadership through democratic procedure.

Outside school activities: Some events Student Council sponsors are not held during the school

day (example: dances).

Club Day: All members meet on C-1. Officers only meet with their class moderators on C-2 days.

 

The Light: Moderator – Ms. Lang

Criteria: All grade levels may join. 

Requirements: Students must be interested in and adept at writing, and also be good at

honoring deadlines. 

Goals & Objectives: Our goal is to produce six issues a year.  Within each issue we strive for

clear and concise writing, strong visual elements, and up-to-date and interesting information.

Outside school activities: We raise money during our Christmas issue for a charity selected by a

junior editor.

Yearbook (The Crest):  Moderator - Shannon Celarek

Criteria: Students are interviewed and selected based on level of full year commitment,

willingness to learn desktop publishing, ability to select and crop photos and ability to write and proofread.  A copy-writing/proofreading quiz is given as an assessment of this skill.

Goals & Objectives: The Club seeks to record and present the events of the school year in a

manner that is comprehensive, meaningful and visually appealing.

Outside school activities: Meetings are after school.

Club Day: after school meetings in the Publications Room (next to E304), Club Day 1 for officers only
